History

V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University is more than 2 centuries old and was established in the year 1804. It is also called by the name Karazin University in Ukraine. It is been named after and renowned Ukrainian academician Vasily Karazin. The university being one of the oldest in the Europe has contributed to a major extent in the development of higher education in Medical Science in Ukrainian education system. The university is also the second oldest MBBS University in Ukraine. More than 150,000 students have already graduated in various medical specialities from the university. University is also associated with three honoured Nobel Prize winner personalities, Ilya Mechnikov, Simon Kuznets, Lev Landau. University is also associated with a field medalist Vladimir Drinfeld.

V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National Medical University is among the few others who initiated Magna Charta Universitatum. The university is also a member of European Nuclear Education Network, International Association of Universities and European University Association. It is also a one of the founders of Association of Russian and Ukrainian Higher – Education Institutions partners and Eurasian Universities Association.

The university has a huge campus having many buildings of Central Scientific Building, Main and Northern Building, the students’ hostel. It also has the botanical garden, 3 research institutes, and 3 museums which are Museum of Natural History, the University History Museum and the Archaeology and Ethnography Museum. Central Scientific library of the University consists of more than 3.5 million journals, researches and other books for students and staffs. For MBBS Ukraine, the university serves as one of the best choices as it is being ranked 3rd by UNESCO in Top-200 Ukraine MBBS universities in the year 2016.

There are total 20 scientific schools in the campus with 125 departments to impart education in speciality subjects. University has recruited some of the best scientists, specialists and academicians for providing training to the students. There are about 300 Doctors of Sciences, around 800 PhDs and more than 15 corresponding members of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Students graduating from the university are working all over the world majorly in USA, Canada, UK, France and Bangalore.

There are more than 20 Senior Experts Examining Boards which defends around 15 Doctorate and more than 60 PhD theses annually.

University publishes more than 300 manuals, 60 textbooks and monographs, over 2500 scientific articles, around 80 issues of University Bulletin. Over 400 articles are also published in International Scientific Journals. V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University also has the privilege to organise national and international conferences counting more than 150 events on research and teaching methodologies.

University has been training more than 1500 international students annually from over 50 countries. It has also collaborated with more than 100 universities and other scientific institutions globally for various scientific researches, education exchange and development in medical sciences. Some of the partners are University of Aberdeen (UK), Roma University (Italy), The Japanese Society of Gastroenterology (Japan), Narcology of The Ministry of Health of Ukraine, IBM Academic Initiative (USA), Department of Medicine SUNY Medical Center (USA), V.I. Grishchenko Clinic of Reproductive Medicine etc.
